Watersum privacy policy

Last updated

The short version

Watersum is developed by Valerio Lo Giudice. This policy covers the Watersum app and this website. You can track water without creating a Watersum account. Your hydration records are stored on your devices, with synchronization through your private iCloud database when available.

Watersum does not include advertising. We do not sell your personal information or use your hydration or Apple Health data for advertising. The app does not send your hydration records to a developer-operated server. On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, OneSignal provides remote push messaging and processes the technical and usage information described below.

Data in the app

Watersum processes the information needed to provide the features you use:

  • Hydration records: drink amounts, dates and times, and edits or deletions you make.
  • Your preferences: daily goals, units, saved containers and their names, and reminder settings.
  • Optional Apple Health data: dietary water samples you allow Watersum to read or write.
  • Local app state: appearance choices, synchronization information, and the snapshots used by widgets, controls, and Shortcuts.

This information powers your daily total, history, reminders, and connected Apple device features. No name, email address, location, or Watersum password is required to use the app.

iCloud and your devices

When iCloud is available, Watersum uses Apple's CloudKit service to synchronize drinks you log in Watersum, goals, containers, and shared settings in the private database associated with your Apple Account. Apple provides this service under its own privacy terms. Your data is not placed in a public CloudKit database.

Watersum can also exchange app data between your paired iPhone and Apple Watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework. Widgets and controls use app-managed local snapshots. The developer does not receive your hydration history through these features.

Water imported from other apps through Apple Health, Health query information, and your Health integration choices stay in a device-local cache outside Watersum's iCloud database.

Apple Health

Apple Health integration is optional and available on supported devices. With the permissions you grant, Watersum can save drinks to Apple Health and include dietary water recorded by other apps in your total. Read and write permissions are controlled separately by Apple's system permission flow.

Health information is used only to provide water tracking and synchronization with Apple Health. It is not used for marketing, advertising, or data brokerage. Watersum does not send imported Health samples to a developer-operated service.

You can pause importing or saving in Watersum, and change system permissions in Apple Health or your device's Health privacy settings. Turning off a Watersum integration switch does not itself revoke system permission or delete existing samples in Apple Health.

Reminders and motion

If you enable reminders, Watersum schedules local water reminders on your device. You can change their schedule in Watersum. These local reminders work independently of OneSignal.

Watersum also uses OneSignal to deliver remote notifications on iPhone, iPad, and Mac through Apple's Push Notification service. The SDK initializes when the app launches, even before notification permission is granted. OneSignal processes push tokens, installation identifiers, notification permission and interaction information, device and app details, language, time zone, IP address, and app session information to operate its messaging service. Watersum does not send hydration records, goals, containers, or Apple Health data to OneSignal, and does not enable OneSignal location collection. See OneSignal's SDK data documentation and privacy policy.

You can allow or block notification delivery in your device's system settings. Blocking delivery does not itself stop the OneSignal SDK's technical data processing. A paired Apple Watch can display notifications mirrored from your iPhone.

The animated water uses device-motion readings while the relevant app screen is active. These readings are processed transiently to animate the water; they are not saved or sent to the developer. The website demo does not request access to your device's motion sensors.

Keeping and deleting data

Your app records remain on your devices and, where synchronization is available, in your private iCloud database until you delete them. You can edit or delete individual drinks in History.

To erase your Watersum data and start over, use the erase action in Settings → General → iCloud sync on iPhone. This requires an iCloud account and a network connection. It clears the Watersum ledger, shared preferences and containers, local Health cache and choices, and pending reminders. Other devices apply the reset when they reconnect and refresh.

A minimal synchronization marker remains in your private iCloud database to prevent an offline device from restoring erased records. It contains reset state rather than drink or Health data.

Erasing Watersum data does not delete samples already saved in Apple Health or revoke system permissions. Manage those separately in Apple Health and your device settings. Deleting the app from one device does not automatically remove data held in iCloud or on your other devices.

The in-app erase action does not delete OneSignal's messaging records. To request deletion of those records, contact the developer using the details below.

This website is hosted by Vercel. As part of serving and securing the site, Vercel may process technical request information such as IP addresses, browser information, requested URLs, and timestamps. This information is used for website delivery, reliability, and security. See Vercel's privacy notice for information about its processing.

We do not add analytics or advertising scripts, tracking cookies, or third-party font requests to this website. The interactive Home demo stores its sample drinks only in page memory. It does not use cookies or local storage, does not connect to the app or Apple Health, and resets when the page is reloaded.

Following an App Store badge takes you to Apple's service, where Apple's terms and privacy policy apply. Other external links are governed by the destination's own policies.

Contact and your choices

For questions about this policy or your personal information, contact Valerio Lo Giudice through the developer's public profile. If you contact us, we use the information you choose to provide to respond and address your request. Please avoid including sensitive health information in a public message.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information and to complain to your local data protection authority. Hydration records held only on your devices and in your private iCloud database can be managed through the app and Apple's settings; the developer cannot retrieve those records for you.

We may update this policy as Watersum changes. The date above identifies the latest version. Material changes to how the app handles data will be reflected here.
